English Shiritori

busy and busy, I don't have any free time for playing games, nevertheless I was playing this game, called "English Shiritori" with absorbed interest, from the moment I discovered it on the internet by chance.

To cut a long long story short , this is English version of Japanese game called Shiritori.

Shiritori is really familiar games for Japanese, so I thought there is already something like this, but I can't find it at least on the internet. still I think it must exist since the rule is really easy, and anyone can hit upon this game.

Shiritori is basically a game for 2 or more than 2 players. each turn player says a "next word", and give turn to next players.

Note : "next word" is the word which starts with the letter equals to the last letter of the word (the last player said). for example, when we play shiritori in English, if the player just before you said "yellow", you can say any word starts with "w", which is the last character of "yellow". inversely, you can't say any word starts with the other characters.

if he failed to say next word before his time limit expires, or he said foul words, he leave this game. we repeat this until the remaining player become only one. Finally, the last remaining player win.

When playing this game in japanese language, we are not allowed to use all words which terminate in "ん(n)", since there are no word which starts with "ん" (acutually who says it  is to leave the game in a lot of local rules.) On the other hand, English don't have any character like "ん". in that sense, English shiritori is reasonable, and it doesn't need an exceptional rule for "ん". wonderful !

however, Shiritori has a big problem. It is "shiritori usually never end". as you can see, there are a lot of Japanese words in Japanese dictionary, and similarly English too. In other words, there is a possibility of eternally continuing, even if we add a rule that you can say any word which used in the past. (in fact, I have an experience of doing shiritori for 3 day....!) So, these days, shiritori is used as one of the game we can play permanently. We can see it in a channel in a lot of Discord server, and literally it basically continues permanently, because of no time limits.

OK, let's go back on the website.

On this website, you can play Shiritori in English.

but, the rule is a bit different. The target is to reduce your point to 0. The point you can reduce per one word, depends on the length of the word, and the time you type it.

So, it is one of important strategies for player to think what character the opponent leaves, and remember a lot of long words.

I have defeated Computer with the extreme level a while ago.

I decided to write some practical words for next time and for the time when I play this game with my friends.

1. yesterday

In shiritori, you can make it longer adding special suffix at the end of word. (if "ly", graceful to gracefully, annual to annually) Because of this clever thinking, you have to deal with a lot of "y" and "s". although "s" is easy, but "y" is difficult. Considering this situation, "yesterday" is really practical word because you can leave "y" to the opponent despite of receiving "y" ! Moreover, because of being familiar word, you maybe never mistake the spell of it.

2. surprisingly

Similarly, We have to prepare for when you receive "s". "surprisingly" is sufficiently long, and you can also leave "y" like "yesterday". moreover, "similarly" and "sufficiently" is also a practical word for same reason. We can lengthen 80% of word adding "s" at the end of the word for plural form, so we don't have to hesitate to remember the word starts with "s".

3. nanotechnologies

"Station", "estimation", "motivation".....yes, "tion" is one of very useful suffixes, and It means we can have a lot of opportunities to use "nanotechnologies". moreover, since it is also a plural form, you can use "nanotechnology" if you want to leave "y" to the next player. to some extent, a plural form of long word, like this word is really worth remembering.

I am really happy to meet this wonderful game, but, hey Mr.Shiritori,
Can you return my time to study for examination next weeks.....?
